Occurrence data for native Asian tree species gathered during the APFORGIS project

This dataset has occurrence data of 63 tree species gathered during the APFORGIS project “Establishing an Information System for conserving native tree species and their genetic resources in Asia-Pacific”. It includes information from 24 countries and covers the period since 1952 to 2019.

Dados Sobre o Projeto

APFORGIS (2017-2019) was a regional initiative supporting the conservation and restoration of socio-economically important, native Asian tree species by addressing knowledge gaps regarding their distribution and threats to them. Through the initiative, up-to-date, expert-validated distribution maps were developed for 63 tropical and subtropical tree species selected by regional experts. Over 60 experts contributed to the project, by providing species occurrence data from project and institutional archives and validating the resulting distribution maps. The distribution and threat maps are available at www.tree-diversity.org. APFORGIS was implemented by Bioversity International in collaboration with the Asia-Pacific Forest Genetic Resources Programme, a regional programme of 15 countries to support the conservation and sustainable use of forest genetic diversity (APFORGEN, www.apforgen.org).

Métodos de Amostragem

Accurate tree species occurrence points were compiled from several sources, mainly APFORGEN members and other individual researchers from the target countries, but also from scientific articles and Bioversity International's Collecting Mission Database (http://bioversity.github.io/geosite/).

Área de Estudo The study covered 24 countries in tropical and subtropical Asia that together form the Indo-Malayan floristic realm.
Controle de Qualidade We standardized the data with the occurrence data collation template developed in the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Crop Wild Relatives project (http://www.cropwildrelatives.org/sadc-cwr-project/) and implemented a three-step cleaning process to ensure high data quality.
