Información recogida y compilada de 273 documentos científicos, que aportan el nombre válido de la especie, su distribución en América y en Colombia, así como el rango altitudinal en el cual han sido colectados, el museo en el que se encuentran depositados. Este listado pretende ser una herramienta de consulta rápida y eficaz para aquellos interesados en la aracnofauna existente en Colombia. Abstract: The present list reviews 914 species of spiders with occurrence in Colombia. The source information was obtained and compiled from two hundred seventy-three scientific documents which provided the valid name of the species, distribution in the Americas and Colombia, elevation range of specimens, and the collections where specimens were deposited. The aim of this list is to be a quick reference tool for those interested in the existing arachnofauna of Colombia. A. Walckenaer y Eugène Simon (1848 - 1924); los alemanes Eugen Graf von Keyserling (1833 - 1889) y Ferdinand Karsch (1853 – 1936) que publicó el primer artículo de arañas de Colombia “Siete nuevas especies de arañas de Santa Marta”; el noruego Embrik Strand (1876 -1947) que publicó “Arañas de la familias: Sparassidae, Lycosidae, Sicaridae y Pholcidae de Colombia”; los ingleses Octavius Pickard-Cambridge (1828 - 1917) y su sobrino Frederick Octavius Pickard-Cambridge (1860 - 1905) que realizaron estudios generales en los que identifican material colectado en viajes, expediciones y colecciones de museos europeos, abarcando todas las familias dentro del orden. La cuota americana durante esta época la ponen Alexander Ivanovitch Petrunkevitch (1875 - 1964) que aunque nació en Kiev llevó a cabo su trabajo aracnológico en Estados Unidos, donde publicó en 1911 el “Catalogue of spiders of North, Central and South America”; George Williams Peckham (1845 - 1914) y Elizabeth Maria Gifford Peckham (1854 - 1940) especialistas de la familia Salticidae. A partir de este momento la tendencia empieza a cambiar y la temática de los trabajos se centra principalmente en revisiones a nivel de familia y género. A mediados del siglo XX aparece la primera recopilación de arañas colombianas, gracias a la gran labor de colección del hermano Nicéforo María (1888 - 1980), encargado del Museo de Historia Natural del Instituto de La Salle, que envió un extenso acopio de arácnidos a Cândido Firmino de Mello-Leitão (1886 - 1948) con los que publicó en 1941 el “Catálogo de las arañas de Colombia”, obra que recopila 294 especies. Desde 1960 hasta la actualidad aparecen numerosas publicaciones de especialistas norteamericanos: Willis John Gertsch (1906 - 1998), Arthur M. Chickering (1887 - 1974), Martin H. Muma, Herbert W. Levi, Norman I. Platnick, Jonathan A. Coddington, William G. Eberhard, Jeremy A. Miller, Ingi Agnarsson, James E. Carico; argentinos: María Elena Galiano (1928 - 2000), Cristina Scioscia, Martín J. Ramírez, Lara Lopardo y Cristian J. Grismado; brasileños: Antonio D. Brescovit, Cristina A. Rheims, Alexandre B. Bonaldo, Adalberto J. Santos, Estevam Luís Cruz da Silva, Arno Antonio Lise y Marcelo de Oliveira Gonzaga y los europeos: Gustavo Hormiga, Bernhard Huber y Hans Georg Müller, quien durante su estancia en Santa Marta entre 1985 y 1986 recogió numerosos ejemplares, publicando 17 artículos con aracnofauna de esta localidad. No hay que olvidar a los aracnólogos colombianos Nicolás Paz, Carlos Valderrama Ardila, Juan Carlo Bello Silva, Oscar Gilede - Moncayo, Alexander Sabogal, Alejandro Calixto, Jaime Pinzón, Ligia Benavides, Jimmy Cabra García, Juan Jacobo Jiménez y Eduardo Flórez quien publicó en 1995 “La diversidad de los arácnidos de Colombia” compilando 680 especies de arañas. No hay que olvidar la gran importancia que tienen las colecciones biológicas en museos, institutos y universidades, cuya función es conservar y almacenar de forma segura los ejemplares que han dado lugar al conocimiento en fauna. Su consulta permite a los especialistas medir la variación que sufren las especies a lo largo del tiempo. Desgraciadamente las colecciones no están exentas de inconvenientes o problemas, como es el caso del Museo de La Salle que fue víctima del fuego el 9 de abril de 1948 en la revuelta que estremeció a Colombia con el asesinato del dirigente político Jorge Eliécer Gaitán, lo que provocó la desaparición de los ejemplares determinados por Cândido F. de Mello-Leitão en 1941 (Rodrígues 2002). Otra gran pérdida, más reciente, sucedió el 15 de mayo de 2010 cuando el fuego consumió la colección de arácnidos del Instituto Butantan en São Paulo que albergaba números ejemplares colombianos. Estas grandes pérdidas nos obligan como aracnólogos a restituir el material destruido y potenciar el almacenaje seguro de material de referencia, de una fauna aún por descubrir. Los departamentos de Cundinamarca y Valle del Cauca presentan el mayor número de especies con 214 y 212 respectivamente; por su parte, los departamentos de Arauca, Guaviare, Sucre y Vichada no registran ninguna. Se desconoce la localidad específica dentro de Colombia de 69 especies. Se conocen arañas colectadas entre los 0 y los 4000 m.s.n.m., la gran mayoría a alturas bajas o medias. Solo cinco especies superan los 3500 m.s.n.m., entre las que encontramos el caso particular de Metepeira glomerabilis (Keyserling, 1892) que es reportada para todo el rango anteriormente mencionado. La distribución de las especies a nivel departamental muestra un claro sesgo de cercanía a grandes ciudades y acceso a los lugares de muestreo por parte de los especialistas. Bogotá, capital de Colombia, es la localidad más citada, predominantemente en la literatura publicada antes de 1941; seguido por el departamento del Valle del Cauca lugar donde trabajó durante algunos años el etólogo - aracnólogo William Eberhard que muestreó los departamentos de Meta y Putumayo. En tercer lugar se encuentra el departamento del Magdalena, gracias al trabajo de Hans Georg Müller en el Invemar, durante 1985 y 1986. -82.73 -66.84 14.82 -4.45 2010-10-31 2010-12-31 Las arañas son consideradas como el séptimo orden en diversidad global (Coddington y Levi 1991); en la actualidad se conocen 42751 especies descritas (Platnick 2012), y puede considerarse como un orden poco conocido en algunos lugares del planeta. En Colombia se han citado 914 especies de arañas en la literatura científica; la primera especie fue descrita en 1837 por Charles Athanase Walckenaer (1771-1852) e identificada con el nombre de Dysdera solers en su obra “Histoire naturelle des insectes”. Según el autor, el ejemplar fue colectado en Cartagena de Indias en el Nuevo Mundo. Desde esa fecha y hasta 2011, se han publicado un total de 273 documentos en los que se mencionan especies de arañas en localidades colombianas. Seis de las especies han sido citadas para Colombia en el Catálogo Mundial, pero la literatura no lo confirma: Mermessus denticulatus (Banks, 1898) (Estados Unidos y México); Dictyna columbiana Becker, 1886 (Venezuela); Chrysometa incachaca Levi, 1986 (Bolivia); Creugas nigricans C. L. En el actual escenario de cambio climático global es importante que tomemos conciencia de que todos los organismos, ya que juegan un papel relevante sobre los cambios ecosistémicos que se avecinan. Recoger, ordenar y difundir información de este tipo permitirá generar medidas adecuadas de protección y manejo de los recursos de los que disponemos. Las herramientas tecnológicas con las que actualmente contamos (internet, foros, blogs, cámaras digitales, escáneres de alta resolución, etc.) nos permiten acceder y participar fácilmente de esta información; esto junto con el naciente Grupo Colombiano de Aracnología, es un excelente caldo de cultivo para que entre todos podamos cumplir el objetivo de conocer mejor a las arañas colombianas, dándoles el lugar que se merecen. unkown Javier Barriga Instituto de Investigación de Recursos Biológicos Alexander von Humboldt Investigador Asociado

El principal problema que se encontró durante el desarrollo de esta compilación fue la falta de información de cada especie, sobre todo en la literatura histórica, con el agravante particular para definir localidades específicas y la transformación a datos actuales de las citas en localidades históricas como Nuevo Mundo (desde 1492), la Gran Colombia (1821 – 1831) o Nueva Granada (1830–1858), caso que encontramos en 73 especies. Territorio Colombiano Se extrajo información de 251 artículos y 22 capítulos de libros, publicados entre los años 1837 y 2010, y se confirma la presencia de 914 especies pertenecientes a 55 familias y 299 géneros, de las cuales el 45,8% sólo han sido descritas en Colombia y el 54,2% comparten distribución con otros países. Se revisan todas las especies citadas por Platnick (2012) en el Catálogo Mundial y se seleccionan 1086 especies de arañas, de las cuales se revisan la literatura en donde aparecen mencionadas, confirmando así su presencia en Colombia. Para obtener los identificadores únicos de las especies (LSIDs) y confirmar los nombres científicos se utilizaron las bases de datos: Catalog of Life (http://www.catalogueoflife.org/), Index to Organism Names (http://www.organismnames.com/) y Ubio (http://www.ubio.org/). Los departamentos Colombianos fueron codificados teniendo en cuenta la división político administrativa de Colombia suministrada por el DANE (http://190.25.231.237/dvpbuscar/dvpbuscar.html) y los países con el estándar ISO 3166-1 alfa-2. Los ejemplares colombianos están depositados en 50 colecciones biológicas, de las cuales el 18% son colecciones particulares y el 78% se encuentran en museos, institutos o colecciones particulares fuera del territorio colombiano.
